Monticello High School Director of Athletics Matthew Pearman held the Fall Semester Athletics Advisory Committee meeting for parents and interested community members of the Southern Albemarle County Feeder Pattern on Monday, September 9, 2024. Minutes were taken and respectfully submitted by a volunteer parent and are shared below.
- Personnel
- New assistant in the athletic department - focusing on coach and student recognition. She has been a division 1 track and field coach and was prior the AD at Tandem Friends School.
- Most recent hires were a new assistant football and assistant cheer coach.
- New Head Baseball coach to be announced soon. Head Boys Tennis Coach only remaining vacancy.
- Budget
- Albemarle County budget - each school was allocated $132,000 in 22-23. 24-25 each school was allocated $102,000.
- 22-23 school year total budget expenditure was $239,000
- In the middle of going through funds spent last year and allocating expenses that are continual. Finished allocating fall and winter sports and already over at $119,000. Essentially if there is no relief from the county the budget is unable to fund spring sports.
- When inquired about budget cuts, have gate receipts. However, they pay for things such as utilizing charter transportation (trips longer than 2 hours), hotel rooms, entry fees to invitationals, van rentals, etc.
- Matt meeting with County to review what expenses, if anything, we can eliminate.
- End of year athlete survey data - survey is done for athletics and not activities.
- 21 categories with questions (1-5 with 5 being the highest).
- In 19 of 21 categories the average score was above a 4.
- Scored lowest in teams win and loss record with team ability and supervision in the locker room. Both have been addressed. Paid supervision until after the students are out of the locker room, then they secure the locker room. They are then re-opened by a coach.
- Highest scoring areas: coach has high expectations with team growth, student athlete requirements are fairly enforced, coach respects injury.
- Students can also offer comments and that is shared with the coaches.
- All these county schools are issuing the same exact survey.
- Participation data - athletics and activities combined, had the exact same numbers in 23-24 (831 students).
- Overall Numbers are the same from 22-23. Athletics alone +34 in girls and +7 in boys.
- Matt met with Dr. Costa to discuss plans for getting the activities numbers back up.
