With today’s return to Stage 4 of reopening for Albemarle County Public Schools, the Virginia High School League (VHSL) spring sports season will soon be upon us. With preseason workouts beginning today (March 15), and tryouts set to begin following Spring Break (April 12), I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you information and steps necessary for participation.
First, it is our mission to share the values of respect and fair play with every student, every day through participation in VHSL athletics and activities. Second, I’ll clarify that all VHSL athletics and activities are extra-curricular, therefore voluntary and optional for any student to participate. Finally, I encourage you to carefully review the information below and reach out directly to the coaches for sport-specific questions.
Matthew Pearman, Sr.
Director of VHSL Athletics & Activities
COVID-19 Safety Information
In an effort to support a healthy and safe environment for our student-athletes, coaches and others, Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) has developed a website specifically for the sharing of Health and Safety measures for athletics/extra-curricular activities. Preseason Workouts Information
Many spring teams have scheduled preseason workouts. These dates can be located at www.GoMonticello.org, click ‘CALENDAR’, or by contacting the coach directly for sport-specific information. Students attending school in-person may drop off athletic equipment in the team locker rooms upon arrival in the morning. After school, the locker rooms may be used for changing rooms only before reporting to practice (Masks & Distancing required). After practice, all personal equipment should be taken home with each student.
First Tryouts/Practice Information & Coach Contact Info
Spring Sports tryouts/practice begins April 12. In the absence of traditional in-person ‘interest meetings’, please contact the coaches directly to express interest in trying out. Students in 8th grade may tryout for Junior Varsity teams in all sports. Roster availability for 8th grade students may vary from sport-to-sport per tryouts policies as outlined in the ACPS Athletic Department Handbook.
Athletics Department Requirements
Activity Buses are intended to assist parents by providing transportation to pre-determined locations, and are not a school-to-home means of transportation. Students should confirm with the driver(s) that they are on the correct bus. Activity buses depart from the bus loop at Monticello High School promptly at 7:30pm on all regular school days.
